On July 1, Mr. Tomer, a member of the Association’s board of directors since 1994, succeeded Erie Attorney James Geronimo as the Association’s president for a two-year term.
“The Edinboro University Alumni Association has been very successful in support of Edinboro University programs and scholarships,” Mr. Tomer said. “Along with an excellent professional staff, the volunteerboard is made up of many highly successful alumni who are willing and able to help the organization and the University. We fully intend to continue this fine tradition.”
Jon. J. Pulice, Edinboro’s Director of Alumni Relations, said Tomer over the years has been “extremely supportive of the University and alumni initiatives.”
“Herm will be another hard-working president who will continue to move the organization forward,” Mr. Pulice said. “Herm’s experience serving on the executive committee of the alumni board, coupled with his knowledge of the business world, will be valuable assets in this important leadership role.”
“Edinboro provided me with an excellent education, both in the classroom and through the many new associations I experienced,” Mr. Tomer said. “The friends I made at Edinboro have stayed with me as friends. They were there for me then, and I rely on them again.”
Since graduating from Edinboro in 1971 with a degree in math education, Mr. Tomer has balanced a busy professional life with an equally full volunteer schedule.
A former lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Intelligence Service, throughout his more than 35-year career Mr. Tomer has been involved with investment and management activities in service to public, private and non-profit organizations.
A past recipient of the Edinboro University Distinguished Alumni Award, he has served on the boards of more than a dozen organizations, three of which he chaired, and he has received many other service awards for his generous donation of time and resources.
Mr. Tomer is the founder of several start-up businesses, and currently serves as president of two regional land development companies, Terra Alta Development Group with its 500-acre Twin Rivers mountain resort project in Boone, North Carolina, and River Forest Partners, with its 500-acre River Forest Country Club project in Freeport, Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh.
Previously, he served as president of BRM/Gateway, the nation’s largest independent disaster recovery center; president of Gateway Archives and Gateway Management Services in Pittsburgh; and vice president of information services with three Fortune 500 companies.
“One of our great challenges as an alumni association is to create an environment where more Edinboro University of Pennsylvania alumni re-connect with their alma mater,” he said. “It’s not just sending a check once a year in response to a student’s phone call although that is important, too but it also means attending the many fine cultural, academic and athletic events sponsored by the University. And it means referring potential students.”
Herm Tomer and his wife, Barbara Corsi Tomer, reside in Natrona Heights, near Pittsburgh, and are the proud parents of six, and proud grandparents of three.
In addition to being recognized as an Edinboro Distinguished Alumni, he has been honored for his community service to Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Other associations and memberships include the American Legion, Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, River Forest Country Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Vietnam Veterans. As his schedule allows, he enjoys golf, photography, fly fishing and travel.
As incoming leader of the Edinboro University Alumni Association, Mr. Tomer has already set his goals and objectives high for his term as president.
“The Association holds alumni events at several locations across the country and these events are very well received by our alumni,” he said. “We hope to do more of this and in so doing, return Edinboro into the lives of our alumni.”
